Capital of the eastern state of Pahang, Kuantan registers on most travellers' itineraries as a pit stop between long hauls of traveling. Here, you can get some rest, freshen up, have a good meal and stock up on your provisions before moving on again.

Here's a tip: East Malaysia is  known for its religious beliefs, and the further up you travel, the more serious they get about their religion. Kuantan marks the starting point of this religious orthodoxy. You won't see Muslim women walking around without their hijab (head covering and dress). Those who don't cover up receive more attention than they deserve from local men. For this reason, we encourage women (especially if they are traveling alone) to try to dress modestly as long as they are in Kuantan and to use their discretion.

The state mosque built in an Ottoman-Moorish style with rocket-like minarets is worth a look, but if you want to enter, both men and women should cover themselves - this means no bare arms or legs. Women should tie a shawl around heads, just in case.
