White water rafting is a popular sport in the foothills of the Himalayas in North India, but if you are visiting only South India, this is the only place where it can be experienced. Kali Adventure camp, run by the Jungle Lodges and Resorts is situated on the banks of the river Kali, just outside the town of Dandeli and is a nature lover’s haven. It is close to the Dandeli wildlife sanctuary and Anshi wildlife sanctuary.

Accommodation: You can choose from a range of accommodation. There is a bungalow with 10 spacious rooms and an indoor dining area, while there are 11 Swiss tents and set on the banks of the river Kali, each with a hammock and campfire area. There is also an ethnic mud cottage and a twelve bed family room.

The dining area is the sides open gazebo or Gol ghar. You can enjoy games like table tennis at the indoor games parlour, watch TV in the lounge or surf the net, as internet facilities are provided.

Activities: The name of the camp indicates the main attractions, apart from rafting—kayaking, canoeing (rappelling down a waterfall), mountain biking, trekking and rock climbing. Visitors are provided with safety gear and given a session on river safety by trained river guides. However, adventure sports are subject to weather conditions and offered at extra cost.

For the less adventurous, there are coracle rides, bird watching, camping amidst dense bamboo thickets, visits to tribal settlements and drives through hilly and thickly forested stretches of Uttara Kannada district. A nature walk following the hornbill trail will reward you with views of beautiful birds and the crocodile-barked tree. The Syntheri rock is a monolithic marvel. You can even look out from the camp and see the Malabar hornbills nesting across the river.

However, the highlight of the program is a visit to the Dandeli wildlife sanctuary with its abundant wild life, including the rare black panther. The highest point, the Shiroli peak, offers panoramic views, while the Kavala caves display interesting shapes of stalactites and stalagmites. There are 300 species of wild birds found here.

If you are tired with the day’s activities, indulge in a traditional ayurvedic massage/therapy and end the day with a barbecue around the campfire, followed by a delicious dinner!

Season: The best time is from October to March, while rafting is between November and June. April to June is not recommended, due to the extreme heat before the monsoons set in.

The nearest railhead and airport is at Hubli, about 2 hours away by road. There are direct overnight buses from Bengaluru. It is 2.5 hours from Goa airport.
